Application and enrolment

Normanhurst Boys High School is a fully academically selective boys secondary school. Entry is competitive and based on academic merit. There is a maximum enrolment of 120 students in each of Years 7 and 8, and between 120 and 135 students in each of Years 9 to 12. Normanhurst Boys High School is unzoned and does not have a local area intake.

The NSW Department of Education Selective High Schools administers Year 7 placement at Normanhurst Boys High School. Please also note that this is a separate process to that of specialist high schools such as performing arts or sports high schools. Students must be Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia to attend a selective high school.

Selective schools such as Normanhurst Boys High School cater for the specific needs or high potential and gifted students, and help them learn by grouping them with other high potential and gifted students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level.

How to apply for our school

Year 7

The application process for entry into an academically selective high school begins when the student is in Year 5, and is longer than the normal public high school enrolment process. Entrance to Year 7 is through an entrance test administered by the NSW Department of Education (DoE) Selective High Schools.

The application form is only available online. Please note that no late applications will be accepted. Applications are available for Year 5 students from October and need to be completed and submitted online by  mid-November  (exact dates are listed on the DoE website each year). The test is held at various locations across the state in the following May, when the student is in Year 6. Sample questions from past papers can also be downloaded from the Selective High Schools website.

Students will be selected according to their position on the results list, which is confidential and available only to the Principal of the chosen high school. There is no other waiting list, and there are no sibling rights.

Each year 120 boys are selected from this list for entry into Normanhurst Boys High School. Students are offered places on the basis of a rank-ordered composite score.

For more information on the selection process, visit the DoE website  https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-7

Year 8 - 11

Entry to selective high schools in Years 8 to 11 is based on decisions made by the local school’s selection committee and, unlike Year 7 entries, does not depend on a centralised program of entry.

Entry to the small number of places that become available in Years 8-11 each year at Normanhurst Boys High School is filled through an application including an entry test in Literacy and Numeracy as well as a review of accompanying documentation to support the student’s application. The number of places offered in each of Years 8-10 usually does not exceed five. However, there are usually 10 to 15 places available for entry into Year 9 and into Year 11.

The entrance examinations for Years 8-11 are conducted at the school each year.

A selection committee will consider each application. An interview at the school may be required before a final offer is made.

Applications for entry to Normanhurst Boys High School for 2026 will be open from 18 June 2025 to 25 July 2025.

The entrance examination for the Years 8-11 2026 intake is currently scheduled for 3 August 2025.

There are three steps to applying at Normanhurst Boys High School:

  1. Fill out an online registration form  (Due 25 July 2025 - this form must be filled out first to generate a PDF unique to your application).
  2. Each application for Years 8-11 needs to be accompanied with an administration fee of  $130  payable online, due before 25 July 2025.
  3. Compile the application package and have it either delivered to the school personally or via Australia Post before Friday 25 July 2025 4:00 pm. Electronic submissions (via email or otherwise) are not accepted.

Documentation will not be accepted on the day of the entrance examination.

*Supplementary supporting documentation consists of, but is not limited to, the student’s last two school reports, their last NAPLAN results, and any academic, sporting or other awards or achievements, both co-curricular and extra-curricular if applicable, etc. No originals please.
