Human Society and Its Environment (HSIE)

Human Society and its Environment is the study of how humans interact with the world, how society operates and how it is changing. Through the study of HSIE, students develop the skills to prepare them to actively and responsibly participate as informed citizens in the contemporary world.

A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:

  • question and make judgements
  • write for a variety of purposes.

In human society and its environment (HSIE), History and Geography are mandatory from Year 7-10. Students learn specific historical and geographical concepts and skills in History and Geography in Years 7 and 8, and students study these two subjects through semesterisation.
