At Normanhurst Boys, French is offered as an elective in Year 9-10. The course establishes an array of vocabulary and grammatical structures to enable students to utilise their language skills in a variety of situations. Students are able to construct and read various texts and communicate information in a range of conversations. The French language and culture are explored through diverse topics such as the environment, health, food, travel and leisure activities/festivals. This familiarity with French culture, traditions and attitudes can equip students as travellers to French-speaking countries such as our South Pacific neighbours (New Caledonia, Tahiti, Vanuatu) and those in South-East Asia. Further abroad, are countries in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, the Indian Ocean region, Canada and the West Indies.
The school provide contexts for students to utilise their language skills within the school such as cooking, as well as an excursion where students complete a workshop at Alliance Française, ordering in French at a café and have a three-course meal at a French restaurant where they can eat snails.
