The study of Food Technology provides students with a broad knowledge and understanding of food properties, processing, preparation, nutritional considerations, and consumption patterns. The subject highlights the importance of hygiene, safe work practices and legislation in the production of food. It also provides students with a context through which to explore the richness, pleasure and variety that food adds to life.
The core units in Year 9 are Food Selection and Health, Foods in Australia and Food for Special Occasions while in Year 10 we study Food Product Development, Food Services and Catering and Food for Special Needs. Students cook a variety of recipes from various cultures. They also analyse a range of case studies on restaurants and restaurateurs both in groups and individually.
There are opportunities to produce and evaluate food-based solutions such as designing food product prototypes, digital recipe books, food portfolios and restaurant floor plans using digital programs. These skills are transferable to other study, work and life contexts that students may encounter.
